The Philippines is becoming more urban as the pace of economic growth quickens and as migration swells existing urban centers. There are currently 154 urban centers consisting of cities and large towns with a population of at least 100,000 and one megacity, Metro Manila. As of 2010, close to 50% of Filipinos reside in these urban centers with about 12 million in Metro Manila alone (Table 1). The urban population is expected to expand as the share of population living in urban areas increases to about 60% by 2040.
